Sustainable gifting is easy to claim and harder to substantiate, and the gap between the two is where most corporate sustainability gifting quietly fails.

"Sustainable" is now a checkbox in most corporate gifting briefs. The problem is that the market has filled up with fake bamboo and greenwashed cotton. Here's what actually works.

Categories that are genuinely sustainable

  • Seed paper notebooks and cards — plantable, real-world sustainable
  • Organic cotton T-shirts and tote bags (GOTS-certified suppliers)
  • Recycled-plastic bottles (bPA-free, made from ocean plastic)
  • Bamboo toothbrushes, combs, travel cutlery — genuinely biodegradable
  • Copper bottles with a fair-trade artisan brand
  • Organic tea and coffee from certified Karnataka estates

Avoid these "green" traps

"Bamboo" laptops, powerbanks, and accessories are 95% plastic with a bamboo veneer. "Eco" T-shirts that are actually poly-cotton. Reusable cups that are single-use plastic-lined. Ask for certifications, not marketing copy.

Cost impact

Genuinely sustainable gifts cost 15-30% more than their conventional equivalents. Most Bangalore tech companies absorb this happily — ESG-conscious customers and employees notice. Startups on tight budgets often go hybrid: sustainable hero item (bottle), conventional filler (notebook).

Substance versus signal

A bamboo item shipped in plastic wrap inside a laminated box is not a sustainable gift, it is a sustainable-looking one — and the recipients most likely to care are the ones most likely to notice. If the packaging is not part of the decision, the material choice is largely cosmetic. Packaging is also the part that is easiest to fix and most often left as an afterthought.

Claims worth checking

  • "Recycled" — what proportion, and post-consumer or post-industrial? The two are very different claims.
  • "Biodegradable" — under what conditions, and over what period? Many require industrial composting that does not exist locally.
  • "Plantable" — whether the seeds are viable and suited to the region, and whether anyone is realistically going to plant it.
  • "Organic cotton" — whether there is a certification behind it or it is a description.

Usefulness is the sustainability test

The most environmentally sound gift is the one that gets used instead of something else. An unwanted item in a recycled material is still an unwanted item, and it will be discarded regardless of what it is made of. Judging a sustainable gift on whether people will actually keep using it is a stricter and more honest test than judging it on the material.
