What sells in an office vending machine is not what people say they want in a survey. The sales data and the stated preferences diverge sharply, and the machines that perform are stocked from the first rather than the second.

The top 10 sellers (by units, across 200+ Bangalore installations)

  1. Oreo biscuits (small pack)
  2. Lays Magic Masala
  3. Kurkure Masala Munch
  4. 5 Star / Dairy Milk small
  5. Kit Kat 4-finger
  6. Maggi noodles
  7. Yoga Bar dark chocolate almond
  8. Pringles Original
  9. Britannia Good Day biscuits
  10. Hide & Seek chocolate

The biggest laggards (waste budget here)

  • Imported European chocolates at premium price points
  • Diet-specific items (sugar-free, keto bars) unless team is health-focused
  • Energy drinks (people bring their own)
  • Nuts and seeds in large packs (small packs sell; large don't)

Consumption patterns

Peak: 10-11am and 3-4pm. Tuesday-Thursday highest (hybrid pattern). Monday is lower, Friday is highest as WFH teams come in for in-person meetings.

Stated preference and revealed preference

Ask an office what it wants in the machine and you will get a healthier answer than the sales log will ever support. This is not dishonesty; it is that people answer surveys as the person they intend to be and buy snacks as the person they are at four in the afternoon. Stock to the data, keep the healthier lines present and visible, and accept that the split will not match the survey.

The patterns that hold across offices

  • Familiar national brands outsell unfamiliar ones at the same price, consistently.
  • Single-serve outsells sharing packs in a workplace, because most consumption is individual and immediate.
  • Savoury outsells sweet in most Indian offices during working hours, with the gap narrowing late in the day.
  • A small number of clear price points moves more volume than many irregular ones.

Prune quarterly

The highest-return habit is cutting the bottom few lines every quarter and trying replacements in those slots. Machines left untouched for a year end up with several dead slots that are effectively reducing the size of the machine, and the sales log makes it obvious which ones they are.
